Trying a Romanian Restaurant in Montreal

Today we go eat at Mamaia, a Romanian restaurant on St-Denis in Montreal, and have Ana judge how authentic it is.

Ever found yourself looking for a good Romanian restaurant in Canada? Well Montreal’s Mamaia might be the place for you.

Food from around the world in Montreal

Montreal is a very diverse city thanks to its population with a large array of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This diversity is one of the main reasons why the island is home to a number of restaurants serving cuisine from all around the world. It takes only a short stroll through St-Catherine to see how varied Montreal’s restaurant scene can be with places offering things like traditional Japanese cuisine or Quebec’s delicious poutine and everything in between. Exploring Montreal’s numerous restaurants is the perfect way for someone to discover new dishes or to reconnect with their own culture and that is what today’s adventure is about.

Last summer, when Ana came to Montreal, I tried bringing her to a Romanian restaurant I had found online, Mamaia. We couldn’t go at the time because the owners had closed the restaurant during their vacation. The idea slipped my mind until a few weeks ago, when we finally ended up going. We also made a vlog out of it to share the experience with all of you.

Being Romanian herself, Ana was the perfect person to tell me and anyone else with as little knowledge of Romanian cuisine as me, whether or not the food at Mamaia was authentic.

A Romanian restaurant in Montreal

Mamaia is situated at 4727 St Denis St, Montreal, only a few minutes away from the Mont-Royal or Laurier metro stations. The location is relatively easy to find, so no worries about getting lost if you’re walking there.

After getting to the restaurant, me and Ana quickly sat down to look at the menu. We each picked different items with the intention to share them. Ana went for the “sarmale” or stuffed cabbage while I got the Romanian sausage, also called “mititei”. For desert we shared some “papanasi”, which you can see in the picture below.
